Red Fern Festival events to expand, vendors remain downtown

TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The Tahlequah Main Street Association voted on Feb. 1 to partner with the City of Tahlequah to expand the Red Fern Festival to the City Airport adding three new events as well as hosting a car show, which was previously downtown.

The TMSA and City have been in festival-planning discussions over the last few months. In January, it was decided to present the idea to the TMSA board of hosting all events downtown - with the exception of the car show. This will require Main Street or Muskogee Ave. to close the last weekend in April to house the arts and crafts vendors as well as the rest of the event.

“This year’s Red Fern Festival will offer a little something for everyone with three new events added to the Red Fern Festival line up and we’re excited about it,” said TMSA President Shay Stanfill.

City Administrator Edward Carr said that he understands that this is one of the more successful events the TMSA hosts, but over the years some of its events have outgrown the downtown area.

“I think it’s great that the City has the opportunity to offer a larger area to host more family-friendly events,” Carr said. “I have no doubt that the three new events, the fly-in, antique tractor show, and static displays featuring our military, fire and police will be a wonderful addition to this festival.”

This event is a TMSA sponsored event and Carr added that the City of Tahlequah is prepared to offer the assistance needed to make the event even more successful.

‘I’m happy to see both the City and the TMSA working together to bring a positive and well-planned event to this community,” said Mayor Jason Nichols. “I know both have worked hard in planning it and I appreciate the time they’ve put into this event. It’s going to be one our city can be proud of.”

In addition to the City and TMSA, the Tahlequah Area Convention and Visitors Bureau will do all marketing in regards to the Red Fern Festival.

The festival will be held the last weekend in April with shopping events leading up to the weekend. For more information regarding the event or on how to become a vendor visit redfernfestival.com.
